First Reading - Joel 2:12-18
12 Now therefore saith the Lord: Be converted to me with all your heart, in fasting, and in weeping, and in mourning.13 And rend your hearts, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, patient and rich in mercy, and ready to repent of the evil.14 Who knoweth but he will return, and forgive, and leave a blessing behind him, sacrifice and libation to the Lord your God?15 Blow the trumpet in Sion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly,16 Gather together the people, sanctify the church, assemble the ancients, gather together the little ones, and them that suck at the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth from his bed, and the bride out of her bride chamber.17 Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lord's ministers shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them. Why should they say among the nations: Where is their God?18 The Lord hath been zealous for his land, and hath spared his people.
Psalm - Ps 51:3-4,5-6ab,12-13,14,17
3 Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity.4 Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.5 For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.6ab To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged.12 Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels.13 Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me.14 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.17 O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
Gospel - 2 Cor 5:20-6:2
20 For Christ therefore we are ambassadors, God as it were exhorting by us. For Christ, we beseech you, be reconciled to God.21 Him, who knew no sin, he hath made sin for us, that we might be made the justice of God in him.1 And we helping do exhort you, that you receive not the grace of God in vain.2 For he saith: In an accepted time have I heard thee; and in the day of salvation have I helped thee. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
First Reading - Jas 4:1-10
1 From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members?2 You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not.3 You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences.4 Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God.5 Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?6 But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.7 Be subject therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will fly from you.8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye double minded.9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.10 Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Psalm - Ps 55:7-8,9-10a,10b-11a,23
7 And I said: Who will give me wings like a dove, and I will fly and be at rest?8 Lo, I have gone far off flying away; and I abode in the wilderness.9 I waited for him that hath saved me from pusillanimity of spirit, and a storm.10a Cast down, O Lord, and divide their tongues; for I have seen iniquity and contradiction in the city.10b Day and night shall iniquity surround it upon its walls: and in the midst thereof are labour,11a Cast thy care upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall not suffer the just to waver for ever.23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee, O Lord.
Gospel - Mk 9:30-37
30 And he taught his disciples, and said to them: The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise again the third day.31 But they understood not the word, and they were afraid to ask him.32 And they came to Capharnaum. And when they were in the house, he asked them: What did you treat of in the way?33 But they held their peace, for in the way they had disputed among themselves, which of them should be the greatest.34 And sitting down, he called the twelve, and saith to them: If any man desire to be first, he shall be the last of all, and the minister of all.35 And taking a child, he set him in the midst of them. Whom when he had embraced, he saith to them:36 Whosoever shall receive one such child as this in my name, receiveth me. And whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.37 John answered him, saying: Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, who followeth not us, and we forbade him.
First Reading - Jas 3:13-18
13 Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom.14 But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth.15 For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish.16 For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work.17 But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation.18 And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace.
Psalm - Ps 19:8,9,10,15
8 The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.9 The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.15 And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight. O Lord, my helper, and my redeemer.
Gospel - Mk 9:14-29
14 And presently all the people seeing Jesus, were astonished and struck with fear; and running to him, they saluted him.15 And he asked them: What do you question about among you?16 And one of the multitude, answering, said: Master, I have brought my son to thee, having a dumb spirit.17 Who, wheresoever he taketh him, dasheth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with the teeth, and pineth away; and I spoke to thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.18 Who answering them, said: O incredulous generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.19 And they brought him. And when he had seen him, immediately the spirit troubled him; and being thrown down upon the ground, he rolled about foaming.20 And he asked his father: How long time is it since this hath happened unto him? But he said: From his infancy:21 And oftentimes hath he cast him into the fire and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, help us, having compassion on us.22 And Jesus saith to him: If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.23 And immediately the father of the boy crying out, with tears said: I do believe, Lord: help my unbelief.24 And when Jesus saw the multitude running together, he threatened the unclean spirit, saying to him: Deaf and dumb spirit, I command thee, go out of him; and enter not any more into him.25 And crying out, and greatly tearing him, he went out of him, and he became as dead, so that many said: He is dead.26 But Jesus taking him by the hand, lifted him up; and he arose.27 And when he was come into the house, his disciples secretly asked him: Why could not we cast him out?28 And he said to them: This kind can go out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.29 And departing from thence, they passed through Galilee, and he would not that any man should know it.
First Reading - Is 43:18-19, 21-22, 24b-25
18 Remember not former things, and look not on things of old.19 Behold I do new things, and now they shall spring forth, verily you shall know them: I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.21 This people have I formed for myself, they shall shew forth my praise.22 But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob, neither hast thou laboured about me, O Israel.24b Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy victims. But thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thy iniquities.25 I am, I am he that blot out thy iniquities for my own sake, and I will not remember thy sins.
Psalm - Ps 41:2-3,4-5,13-14
2 Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.3 The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.4 The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.5 I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.13 But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence: and hast established me in thy sight for ever.14 Blessed by the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. So be it. So be it.
Second Reading - 2 Cor 1:18-22
18 But God is faithful, for our preaching which was to you, was not, It is, and It is not.19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ who was preached among you by us, by me, and Sylvanus, and Timothy, was not, It is and It is not, but, It is, was in him.20 For all the promises of God are in him, It is; therefore also by him, amen to God, unto our glory.21 Now he that confirmeth us with you in Christ, and that hath anointed us, is God:22 Who also hath sealed us, and given the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.
Gospel - Mk 2:1-12
1 And again he entered into Capharnaum after some days.2 And it was heard that he was in the house, and many came together, so that there was no room; no, not even at the door; and he spoke to them the word.3 And they came to him, bringing one sick of the palsy, who was carried by four.4 And when they could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was; and opening it, they let down the bed wherein the man sick of the palsy lay.5 And when Jesus had seen their faith, he saith to the sick of the palsy: Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.6 And there were some of the scribes sitting there, and thinking in their hearts:7 Why doth this man speak thus? he blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins, but God only?8 Which Jesus presently knowing in his spirit, that they so thought within themselves, saith to them: Why think you these things in your hearts?9 Which is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk?10 But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)11 I say to thee: Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.12 And immediately he arose; and taking up his bed, went his way in the sight of all; so that all wondered and glorified God, saying: We never saw the like.
First Reading - Jas 2:14-24, 26
14 What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him?15 And if a brother or sister be naked, and want daily food:16 And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit?17 So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself.18 But some man will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without works; and I will shew thee, by works, my faith.19 Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar?22 Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect?23 And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God.24 Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only?26 For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.
Psalm - Ps 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
1 Praise the Lord, ye children: praise ye the name of the Lord.2 Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth now and for ever.3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, the name of the Lord is worthy of praise.4 The Lord is high above all nations; and his glory above the heavens.5 Who is as the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high:6 And looketh down on the low things in heaven and in earth?
Gospel - Mk 8:34,9:1
34 And calling the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them: If any man will follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter and James and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves, and was transfigured before them.
First Reading - Jas 2:1-9
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with respect of persons.2 For if there shall come into your assembly a man having a golden ring, in fine apparel, and there shall come in also a poor man in mean attire,3 And you have respect to him that is clothed with the fine apparel, and shall say to him: Sit thou here well; but say to the poor man: Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool:4 Do you not judge within yourselves, and are become judges of unjust thoughts?5 Hearken, my dearest brethren: hath not God chosen the poor in this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him?6 But you have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you by might? and do not they draw you before the judgment seats?7 Do not they blaspheme the good name that is invoked upon you?8 If then you fulfill the royal law, according to the scriptures, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; you do well.9 But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, being reproved by the law as transgressors.
Psalm - Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
2 Take hold of arms and shield: and rise up to help me.3 Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me: say to my soul: I am thy salvation.4 Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek after my soul. Let them be turned back and be confounded that devise against me.5 Let them become as dust before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord straiten them.6 Let their way become dark and slippery; and let the angel of the Lord pursue them.7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction: without cause they have upbraided my soul.
Gospel - Mk 8:27-33
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And in the way, he asked his disciples, saying to them: Whom do men say that I am?28 Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets.29 Then he saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Peter answering said to him: Thou art the Christ.30 And he strictly charged them that they should not tell any man of him.31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the ancients and by the high priests, and the scribes, and be killed: and after three days rise again.32 And he spoke the word openly. And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him.33 Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter, saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savorest not the things that are of God, but that are of men.
First Reading - Jas 1:19-27
19 You know, my dearest brethren. And let every man be swift to hear, but slow to speak, and slow to anger.20 For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God.21 Wherefore casting away all uncleanness, and abundance of naughtiness, with meekness receive the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.23 For if a man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass.24 For he beheld himself, and went his way, and presently forgot what manner of man he was.25 But he that hath looked into the perfect law of liberty, and hath continued therein, not becoming a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work; this man shall be blessed in his deed.26 And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man's religion is vain.27 Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
